Award Summary InformationCaptain Steve Ritchie significantly contributed to the success of the Linebacker Air Offensive over North Viet¨nam in 1972. While serving as the Weapons Officer for the 432nd Tactical Reconnaissance Wing he was responsible for developing and refining counter-air tactics and led numerous counter-air missions over North Vietnam. He shot down one MIG-21 aircraft on 10 May 1972, a second on 31 May, and two MIG-21 aircraft on 8 July. On 28 August 1972, while flying his 339th combat mission, Captain Ritchie shot down his fifth MIG-21, becoming the first Air Force Ace of the Vietnam War.
